D3.js is a JavaScript library for producing dynamic, interactive data visualizations in web browsers. It makes use of SVG components to render data on websites and provides web developers with fine control over the rendering of charts and components. HTML elements can be selected to create child SVG objects which can be styled at will. CSS or javascript transitions can be added as well as dynamic effects or tooltips.
Since each object can be styled using CSS, a lot of stylistic choices are available to individual developers.
Large datasets can be rendered as SVG objects using D3.js functions to generate text/graphic charts and diagrams in the form of SVG paths. D3 accepts various formats of data, such as JSON, comma-separated values (CSV) or geoJSON to render maps.
To date, D3 is wildly popular as an open source javascript library.
